Neuropathy Treatments
What is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nerves that result in sensory changes in a person’s hands and feet. Damage to these small nerves result in pain, burning sensation, tingling, or numbness. The burning pain in the feet is often accompanied by stabbing or aching pain, electrical shock or pins-and-needles sensation, and cramping of the feet and calves. Symptoms are often worse at night and often affect one’s sleep. This condition is also known as “Restless Leg Syndrome”. In some patients, the symptom’s are also felt in the hands.
How is Neuropathy treated at ProCare Chiropractic Clinics?
Using state-of-the-art technology, our Doctor examines the patient to undercover if there is an underlying problem with the small nerves in the lower legs, feet, or hands and fingers. If your exam reveals that you do suffer a small-fiber neuropathy, our care plans focus on the rehabilitation of the nerves and reduction of the symptoms. This is accomplished by our non-invasive, drug-free, low-level light therapy which has been clinically proven to reduce the symptoms of Small Fiber Neuropathy. No surgery or needles are involved. In fact, the majority of our patients actually fall asleep during their treatments. (Sometimes we have to wake them up because they snore quite loudly!) The use of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes), also called Monochromatic Infrared Energy is basically LIGHT THERAPY. Light therapy has been used by the medical profession for more than 20 years, to reduce pain and increase circulation. The LEDs, which glow bright red, create a comforting warm feeling when applied to the patient’s hands and feet. This causes an increase in circulation, and may also reduce and alleviate pain. Diabetic patients with peripheral Neuropathy typically may experience an increase in sensation to pressure and hot/cold, as well as less pain.
Can This Treatment Help Me?
As mentioned previously, one of the underlying effects of light therapy is increasing blood circulation. An increase in blood flow reduces pain and affects healing. While no therapy is 100% effective, a study of 784 patients published in the Journal of Neurological & Orthopedic Surgeons demonstrated that 88.8% treated with light therapy had excellent to total pain relief after 12 treatments. A second study surveyed 252 patients with diabetes who experienced chronic foot and leg pain. After receiving Light Therapy, 87% reported substantial reduction in their foot and leg pain. If you suffer from chronic foot and hand pain due to Peripheral Neuropathy, can you imagine the hope and excitement of having an 87% chance of getting excellent to total pain relief?!?!?
